Should I wear a mouthguard when I play sport?

A mouthguard helps absorb the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw. Mouthguards protect your teeth from getting broken or knocked out. The Australian Dental Association recommends that only a custom-fitted mouthguard should be worn. They provide greater levels of protection, are not as easily dislodged by impact, and are more comfortable than self-fitted models.

Are there any ways to reduce the number of cavities I will get?

He decays rate can be reduced. Dietary issues such as reducing the amount and frequency of sugars and carbohydrates are important. Especially important are oral hygiene measures such as brushing, flossing, pinksters and water picks. Use of Tooth Mousse Plus, bicarbonate mouthwashes, and high fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash is highly effective. Our Dentist and hygienist can give advice on which options are most suited to you.

I have very sensitive teeth; can I do anything to reduce this?

There are several causes of sensitivity including decay and cracked teeth which will require attention by a Dentist. Another very common cause of sensitivity is gum recession as a result of gum (periodontal) disease or over vigorous brushing with a hard toothbrush. Acids in the diet and over abrasive toothpastes will also increase sensitivity. Colgate Pro-Relief Toothpaste is the most effective toothpaste. A Dentist or Hygienist can discuss which will be best in your situation.

Does sugar (lollies, etc) cause cavities?

Tooth decay results from repeated acid attacks on tooth enamel. The decay process begins with plaque, the sticky layer of harmful bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. The bacteria use sugars and other carbohydrates found in most foods and beverages to produce damaging acids. Every time teeth are exposed to sugar, acids can attack the tooth enamel for up to 40 minutes.
