The symptoms of gum disease are often not noticeable until the disease is advanced. They include red or swollen gums, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, gum abscess, loose teeth, sensitive teeth & shrinking or receding gums. Smoking can hide these symptoms as well as making gum disease worse.
The diagnosis of gum disease requires a periodontal examination at the Periodontics & Dental Implants Specialist Centre where Dr. Zhang will look at the shape and texture of the gums, take measurement of the spaces between the teeth and gum and look at X-rays of the bone and teeth. During the initial consultation and examination, Dr. Zhang will discuss with you the diagnosis and prognosis and formulate an individualised treatment plan if required.

Do I need a referral?
You do not need a referral to see a periodontist. It is most common for people to have a referral from a general dentist to see any dental specialist. However, a referral is not necessary. In fact, there are occasions when you may choose to go directly to a periodontist or to refer a family member or friend to your own periodontist.
Why choose a periodontist?
Your dentist can and does provide routine dental care in order to maintain the health of your oral conditions. However, if you are suffering from periodontitis or symptoms of gum disease, you will likely be referred to a gum specialist, also known as periodontist, who is specially trained to provide more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
