When should my child first visit the dentist?
A child'™s first dental visit should occur when their first baby tooth erupts into the mouth and no later than their first birthday. This usually happens between 3-6 months. Good oral hygiene should be instituted as soon as teeth appear.
Do I need a referral to see the orthodontist at Smile Hawthorn?
At Smile Hawthorn, you do not need a referral to see the Orthodontist. Your consultation can be booked via our online booking portal or by telephoning our clinic for an appointment.
What should I expect at my first orthodontic visit?
At the first appointment, we will listen to your concerns, address any questions you may have, and gather all the relevant information to advise you on the best timing and appliance for treatment, the procedures, estimated duration and costs as well as the various payment options available to you.
What kind of toothpaste should I use?
Fluoridated toothpastes are generally not required for infants under 18months of age. Children up to 6 years of age are generally recommended to use toothpastes with fluoride concentrations of 500ppm. Beyond the age of 6, children are generally recommended to use adult strength toothpastes at 1000ppm. For sensitive teeth, any desensitizing toothpaste is effective with time.
What do I do if I knock out an adult tooth?
Hold the tooth by the crown (white part) If the tooth is contaminated with dirt or debris, rinse shortly with cold tap water and the place the tooth back in its place. Whilst holding the tooth in place, gently bite on a handkerchief/napkin to hold it in position. If you cannot place the tooth back in the mouth, then place it in a cup of milk or saline, or when not available, place it between your cheeks and gums). Contact us as soon as reasonably possible.
How often should I have dental X-rays taken?
X-rays are an important diagnostic tool that provides information that cannot be gleaned through visual examination alone: - Decay: its location and extent - Periodontal disease and the associated loss of bone - Presence of cysts, tumours and teeth in the bone - Abnormalities of the roots and bone At Smile Hawthorn, we employ the latest in digital x-ray technology, which significantly lowers the amount of radiation exposure to the patient.
Are baby teeth important?
