What is a Cataract?
A cataract develops when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. With an increasing incidence with age, these lens opacities can cause blurriness, glare, difficulty with driving or reading in one or both eyes.
What is Pterygium?
Associated with exposure to strong sunlight and dry hot environments, the surface 'skin' layer of the eye (Conjunctiva) degenerates to become a Pterygium, an elevated yellow-pink wing-shaped lesion which extends onto the cornea and may interfere with vision. Symptoms may include loss of vision, redness, irritation, poor cosmesis, grittiness and dry eyes
What is Eyelid Pathology?
Common eyelid inflammation (Blepharitis), blocked oil glands (Chalazion/Meibomian cyst), eyelash folliculitis (Stye) are treated using a combination of warm lid massage, eye drops/ointments and surgical drainage in the office. Abnormal positions of the eyelid (Ectropion/Entropion) may be treated with surgery to reform a more normal anatomical position. Eyelid tumours may require excisional biopsy and reconstructive eyelid surgery.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma encompasses a group of ocular disorders whereby the pressure inside the eyeball is high enough to cause damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision. Typically, this is due to an imbalance between the production of aqueous fluid into the eye and the exit of fluid out of the eye. Up to 50% of people with glaucoma remain undiagnosed. Our aim is to detect glaucoma early to minimize the risk of blindness using clinical judgement and a combination of sensitive diagnostic tests.
What is Diabetes, and how does it affect vision?
Impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus can cause metabolic disturbance to the retina, retinal haemorrhages and leakage of fluids and proteins from the fragile retinal blood vessels (Diabetic Retinopathy & Diabetic Maculopathy). Untreated, complications such as cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment could develop and lead to vision impairment.
What is Squints (Ocular Misalignment)?
Squint or Strabismus is a misalignment of the two eyes caused by an imbalance of the nerve supply and/or muscle pulleys of the eyes. Associated with a family history, prematurity and complicated obstetrics history, squints can cause lazy eye (Amblyopia), reduced depth perception (stereopsis), and cosmetic concerns in childhood, and double vision in adults.
