How long can rainwater be stored for drinking?

Depending on the system, this can vary from one week to an indefinite period. If the tank has the right materials and components in place to keep out contaminants – such as algae and mosquitos – the water can typically last for a much longer period in a drinkable state.

How often should I clean out my gutters?

In most cases, it is advisable to give your gutters a clean twice a year. However, if your gutters are particularly prone to being filled with leaves or other debris, a more regular clean may be required.

How often should I service my hot water system?

It is advisable to conduct a full service of the system and replace the valves every 5 years (though valves should be checked every few months). If optimally serviced, a hot water system can run smoothly for 10 to 12 years.

Do I need backflow prevention testing?

Most council requirements stipulate that backflow testing is necessary if an irrigation system, fire hose, or underground rainwater tank is present at a business site. Businesses that have machinery connected to mains or water outlets near grease traps, pollutants, and harmful chemicals also require testing.

How easily can blockages be located?

Most professional plumbers now work with CCTV drain cameras and radar pipe locator tools. These allow blockages to be diagnosed rapidly and accurately.

What are the advantages of flow-restricted taps?

Restricted taps can help you save on water usage and electricity. They are therefore a cost-effective solution for homes and businesses. Additionally, they can help make your property eco-friendlier, as they reduce pressure put on natural water resources.

What causes blocked drains?

The most common causes of blocked drains are the build-up of solid waste and encroaching tree roots. A malfunctioning sink garbage disposal unit can also cause blockage, especially if it has been used to remove grease and fat.

How do I tell if I have a gas leak?

There are a number of signs to look out for. If you notice a sulfuric (rotten egg) smell, bubbles in your water supply, or a hissing sound emanating near your gas line, a leak is the likely culprit. Rapidly wilting house plants may also be a sign of a leak. Of course, there are physical signs also. The sudden onset of dizziness, breathing difficulties, nausea, or nose bleeds may indicate a gas leak. If you suspect a leak, it’s crucial that you call a gas repair professional as soon as possible.

Do gas cooktops need a regulator?

Yes. Gas regulators are required for all appliances fuelled by LPG, propane gas, and natural gas. They help to ensure that fuel is delivered safely at the flow and pressure rate required by the appliance.

Does rainwater need to be treated?

Yes. Rainwater may contain certain pollutants or traces of animal excrement that pose a threat to your health. Therefore, a process of filtration and sterilisation needs to be carried out prior to it being consumed.
