What causes dental disease?

Bacteria breed around the tooth. This leads to inflammation and eventual loss of the attachments that hold the teeth in place.

My pet has a fractured/chipped tooth, do we really need to have it treated?

Yes, especially if the internal part of the tooth (the pulp) is involved. The pulp contains all of the blood vessels and nerves for the tooth and if exposed, is very painful. Bacteria can enter into the tooth and infect the pulp and lead to infection within the jawbone.

What problems are associated with dental disease?

Kidney disease, heart disease and liver disease can all be associated with dental disease. He increased bacteria in the mouth end up circulating in the body. An unhealthy mouth leads to an unhealthy body.

What is the best treatment?

Many dogs and cats need a general anaesthetic to assess the teeth and clean thoroughly under the gum line. Teeth that cannot be saved are generally removed to prevent problems in the future.

What happens to my pet when it is booked in for radiographs?

Most of our patients are admitted into hospital for the day to have radiographs taken, unless it is an emergency and we'll take them immediately. We ask that you bring your pet in unfed on the morning of admission, as they will most likely be sedated or anaesthetised to allow us to take the best quality radiographs possible.

How can I contact you?

You can contact us on following Telephone: 03 9747 2506 Email: info@meltonvet.com.au

Does my pet really need a general anaesthetic?

In order for us to properly assess and treat dental disease general anaesthesia is usually necessary. Unfortunately we can't ask you pet to 'open wide' and we need to keep all of our fingers so it is best that your pet is anesthetised.

Where are you located?

We are located at 18 Alexandra St, Melton VIC 3337.

What is an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound scanning is a painless procedure that uses high frequency sound waves (inaudible to humans) to produce images of structures within the body. When sound waves are directed into the body, some are absorbed by body tissues and others bounce back. The sound waves that bounce back are measured by the ultrasound machine and are transformed into an image on a screen.

Why is prevention so important?

Prevention is the key with dental disease. Wet and soft food diets are notorious for allowing plaque and tartar to accumulate. It is vital that your pet is on a premium quality diet that helps to clean their teeth as they chew. Speak to us to find out the most appropriate diet for your pet.
