How do I keep my denture clean?

First of all, remember this: do not use toothpaste! Regular toothpaste is abrasive and can damage your dentures. We recommend you to brush your denture with a medium bristle toothbrush in warm soapy water. Any soap is sufficient for cleaning dentures, but make sure you rinse off all the soap thoroughly with water. Once cleaned, let your denture dry on a soft towel in a safe place overnight. Do not soak your dentures in water, which was the standard practice, recommended in previous days.

Will dentures affect the way I speak?

Getting dentures for the first time is an adjustment, to say the least. There are many things you are going to have to practice a little to truly master and speaking is one. Don't worry, it's not like re-learning how to speak completely. You may experience some lisping at first, but it shouldn't take long to re-teach your tongue and lips to adjust in order to regain your original speech patterns.

What are implants?

Implants are best described as artificial tooth roots placed in the jaw. These artificial roots can be used to help support an overdenture.

My denture is loose. Why?

Quite often, there is a link between the age of your denture and the fit. If your denture is over seven years old, it will be likely your denture will need replacing. As we age our bones undergo certain changes, particularly when there are no teeth in the jaw bone. If you've had your denture for over six months and it feels loose, contact us so we can check the stability and retention as you may need a reline.

How often should I clean my new dentures?

They should be removed and cleaned at least twice per day. Most people prefer to do this after meals and when they go to bed. Cleaning your dentures often will reduce irritation, damage, bad breath and staining and helps to keep your mouth healthy.

What is an implant-retained denture?

This is a denture that is supported, stabilised and otherwise held into place by dental implants that have been inserted into the jaw. This may be a fixed or a removable appliance.

Should my dentures come out at night?

We always recommend you remove your denture overnight as it is a non-fixed and foreign object. This allows your gums and tissues to breathe and saliva to circulate.

How frequently should a denture be replaced?

We recommend replacing dentures every 5 to 10 years based on your denture materials and care to replace a denture generally between 5 to 10 years but it could different in every case, based on person's dietary and the speed of shrinkage of the jaw bones and most importantly the wear strength of the artificial teeth, used to make the denture.

Can I claim on my health insurance?

Yes, Pearl Denture Studio is a preferred provider with Medibank Private and Bupa. We also accept all major health funds using our HICAPS facility, patients are able to claim on the spot and access their health fund benefit electronically.

Does a dry mouth cause problems with dentures?

Yes, many people who have a dry mouth due to hormone changes or other conditions experience problems with their dentures. Artificial saliva can be prescribed to help overcome these problems.
