How can a compounding pharmacist prepare medication?
A compounding pharmacist can prepare medication using several unique delivery systems such as creams, transdermal gels, suspensions, capsules and troches or lozenges.
What are the benefits of compounding?
A patient may be allergic to an ingredient found in a commercially manufactured medication. Allergenic ingredients include lactose, preservatives, dyes, gluten and sugar. A compounding pharmacist can flavour many medications to make them more palatable or patients who have difficulty swallowing may have a medication made into a liquid form. Some medications can be compounded in a topical form such as a cream or a gel that allows the medicine to be absorbed through the skin instead of swallowing.
What is compounding?
Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalised medications for patients. Compounded medications are made based on a practitioner's prescription in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the patient and the prescriber to customise a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.
