Inside the knee joint are pieces of cartilage called menisci. The menisci act as shock absorbers between the femur and tibia. Many times these cartilages are also damaged when the cruciate ligament ruptures. They are usually repaired at the same time as the ligament surgery.
Unfortunately, most dogs will eventually require surgery to correct this painful injury. Sometimes older dogs, weighing less than 10kg, if kept restricted to cage rest may improve slightly without surgery. Cruciate ligament rupture is also seen in the feline population, although it is not a very common occurrence.
Pancreatitis simply means inflammation of the pancreas. Basically, the enzymes that break down food become activated while still in the pancreas! They then eat into it and the surrounding organs like battery acid. Acute: a very sudden onset disease characterised by intense abdominal pain, usually accompanied by vomiting and going off food and water. These dogs generally look very unwell. Chronic: some dogs have an ongoing low-grade pancreatitis that can lead to irreversible damage.
Although we don't know the exact causes of this disease, we do know the definite risk factors. Overweight, middle aged to older dogs - especially the smaller breeds A recent meal very high in fat and/or protein and sometimes bones (David also refers to this as the Boxing Day Brigade - due to the fact, that most dogs receive fatty left-overs after the Christmas meals) Certain medication e.g. epilepsy drugs Obstruction of the pancreatic duct although this is very rare.
There are many causes of seizures. Epilepsy is the most common cause of seizures in the dog. Other causes can include liver disease, kidney failure, and poisoning or brain tumours.
Status epilepticus is a serious life-threatening situation. It is characterised by a seizure that lasts more than five minutes. When it occurs, the dog's life is endangered. Unless intravenous medication is given promptly, the patient may die. If this occurs, you should seek treatment immediately.
