Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

Correct brushing and flossing every day prevents plaque from developing around the teeth and gums. However, if there becomes a build-up of plaque or calculus around the mouth, bacteria numbers can increase leading to gingivitis. Gingivitis can be recognized by red, swollen gums that will bleed easily. Bleeding gums should be taken seriously as if left untreated could lead to periodontal disease. Regular dental visits and effective home care will help ensure healthy gums for life.

What can I do if I'm scared about dental treatments?

Dental Anxiety or fear of the dentist is a common obstacle that prevents otherwise intelligent and rational people from seeking dental treatment. At BDP we accept anxious patients may have greater concerns or fears over the dental treatment they require. We make time to carefully explain all procedures and discuss all aspects of the treatment to help reduce their anxiety. Dental treatment under General Anaesthetic or Nitrous Oxide Sedation is also a service we provide for our nervous patients.

What age should a child have their first dental visit?

Dental check-ups should begin when children are about the age of 3 years old. We encourage parents to bring younger children along to watch when they come for their regular dental check-ups. This helps children to create positive associations with the dental practice and team prior to their first experience in the dental chair.

Should I be using an electric Toothbrush?

Electric t/b's use electric power to move the brush head in an oscillating pattern, allowing gentle cleaning around the teeth and gums. The smaller size head of an electric t/b can make reaching to the far corners of your mouth and lingual (tongue side) surfaces easier. Many electric t/b's now come with added features of timers, warnings when the user is pushing to hard and even reminders to change the brush head regularly. All patients can benefit from the efficiency of an electric t/b.

My health fund has suggested I see a preferred provider dentist for a better rebate. What does this mean?

Preferred provider dentists are bound by the restrictions imposed upon them by the health fund they are contracted to. At Bolsover Dental Practice we pride ourselves on providing our patients with the treatment you need, not just what the health funds are willing to pay for under their rules. This means you will receive optimal dental treatment specifically tailored for you and your individual needs.

Why should I have regular dental check-ups?

Regular check-ups help to keep your gums healthy and allow early detection of dental problems such as gum disease, tooth decay and oral cancer. At Bolsover Dental Practice we recommend 6 monthly preventative dental care appointments, where your dentist will complete a comprehensive examination, routine scaling and discuss effective home care for optimal oral health.

What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a Medicare scheme providing a range of dental services to eligible children aged 2-17 years of age. Benefits are capped at $1000 over 2 years as per Medicare's terms and conditions relating to the CDBS. Bolsover Dental Practice bulk bills Medicare so there is no out of pocket cost for eligible patients. For more information or to check your child's eligibility, please contact our friendly team today on (07) 4927 2569.

Do you bulk bill?

We offer bulk billing for children aged 2-17 years who are eligible for Medicare's Child Dental Benefits scheme and those holding a DVA Gold Card. Medicare may be able to advise whether you are eligible for services at a public dental hospital or clinic if you are seeking bulk billing outside of these schemes.

Does everyone need to have their wisdom teeth removed?

Wisdom teeth are the rear molars that usually erupt last, between 17-25 years. When there is sufficient room in the mouth, wisdom teeth can erupt into the correct position and become a valuable asset. However for various reasons wisdom teeth can sometimes become impacted, especially when they are not erupting in the correct direction or there isn't enough room in the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth generally need to be extracted as they can cause infection, pain and compromise other healthy teeth.

Why are dental X-rays important?

X-ray examinations are an important diagnostic tool providing the dentist with essential information on the structure and condition of your mouth which is not visible to the naked eye. Dentists use x-rays to help diagnose decay, abscesses, periodontal disease, abnormal growths, changes in the jaw bone condition and impacted teeth to name a few. With the help of x-rays dental problems can be detected early and save patient's time, finances, unnecessary discomfort, stress and complications.
