I took my father’s watch and my grandfather’s rare 50y.o+ greyhound stopwatch in to be fixed by Allen in mid-2023. I didn’t hear anything for months, and upon calling was told that they weren’t ready (with a fair amount of attitude). After yet another month, I dropped into the shop, where Allen told me they’d been ready for “a long time”, even though he hadn’t bothered to call me.



Upon collection, I realised that neither price was working correctly. Even though the watch went through a full service, the date setting function didn’t work, and the stopwatch failed to keep time or reset to 0. Allen didn’t inform me of either problem, but happily charged me $730.



My partner took the stopwatch back in and received a mouthful of condescending abuse, with Allen insisting that the timer would never be accurate. If this were the case, he should have told me this at the start rather than charging me hundreds of dollars for absolutely nothing. He insisted that a part was missing from the watch, which is highly unlikely given that it has sat on a shelf for the majority of its life. He explained that he then had made a part to fit it, but my suspicion is that Allen lost a part when he opened the timer. Even so, he took it back and apparently ordered new part for the timer. Why Allen didn’t just order the part in the first place rather than hash something together is completely beyond me, and I have no idea why he took the job on if he didn’t think he could do it to a satisfactory degree.



Again I didn’t hear anything for months, and after a few rude phone calls, he finally told me I could have the timer back. My partner went in to pick it up over six months after I initially gave it to him, and Allen threw the timer at my partner, causing it to bounce across the counter. This is no way to treat a family heirloom, especially one that Allen himself described as rare. In this exchange, he called my partner an “arrogant dog”, and literally barked like a dog. The timer is still not working and Allen refused to provide a refund. He insists that it will never work properly, which is ridiculous.



Quite simply, this man’s behaviour is abusive and highly unprofessional. He seems fine if everything goes well, but if he is called out for doing a bad job, he rapidly turns into an ill-tempered child. This is reflected in many other reviews.



Throughout this whole process, Allen spoke over the top of me, patronised me for being a young female, made racial comments regarding indigenous people and abused my partner in several fits of anger. He also completely disregarded the value of a rare family heirloom, and refused to refund the significant fee he charged after being unable to complete a job after 6 months. I suggest finding someone who is honest and capable.

We had an old clock restored last year. It looks beautiful and it’s running beautifully. We often use this business for simple tasks and always greeted courteously and the job done quickly. Thank you
