We are a proudly family owned and operated business for the past 26 years by Dr.Peter Rickford B.V.Sc (Hons.)

The Sunshine Beach Veterinary Surgery is proudly a family owned and operated business for the past 26 years by Dr.Peter Rickford B.V.Sc, Hons. We place great stock in being a sole practitioner as this allows us to provide a personal service every time we see you and your loved pet. This is also reassuring for your pet as they will always have the same person seeing them each time. Peter and his nurses enjoy being a part of your pet’s journey from puppy/kitten care right through to geriatric care and everything during the many years in-between.

Peter and his nurses enjoy being a part of your pet’s journey from puppy/kitten care right through to geriatric care and everything during the many years in-between. Having wanted to be a vet from an early age and combining study with surfing, Peter is fortunate to love his job and be able to balance it with the beach lifestyle he shares with his wife and 2 sons and a menagerie of pets.

In appreciation of the wonderful opportunities the vet surgery has provided, Peter is very enthusiastic in supporting various worthy pet charities such as Smart Pups, Silver Lining, Animal Rescue QLD, and other fostering and re-homing charities. Indeed if you are associated with a charity and are looking for charitable vet help please give us a call.

FAQschevron down

I have an emergency?

During clinic hours, an emergency will always take priority.

We just found a stray pet, what do we do?

If you’ve found a dog or cat roaming, we can scan it for microchip ID and help you get it back to the owner.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, Mastercard and Visa.

I do not have the capability to bring my pet to your clinic, do you make house calls?

We can do house calls by prior arrangement.

Do you board pets?

We have the facility to board cats for bona-fide clients on a short-term basis, particularly for those requiring medication.

At what age can I have my pet spayed or neutered?

We recommend at 6 months. Any earlier they are more of an anaesthetic risk. Any later and the females could have their first “season” which significantly increases the risk of mammary tumours later in life.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, appointments are preferred and take priority over walk-ins unless it’s an emergency.

Is heartworm something to worry about?

Yes. Heartworm is endemic to South East Queensland. It is transmitted by mosquitos so all dogs can potentially be exposed. Prevention is as simple as a yearly injection (highly recommended as provides good compliance combined with a reminder from us when due again). Or, alternatively, a monthly tablet on-going.
