How much ventilation is necessary?

Ventilation needs to be enough to maintain a temperature of about 28 degrees and a humidity of about 50% in the centre of the plant canopy. Generally, it is better to have too much than too little ventilation. As a rule of thumb, during summer give about 120 Lp/sec of air going in & the same amount being vented per square/m of floor area. Try to maintain the temperature inside no higher than outside. In winter, you will usually need less ventilation.

Is it true that hydroponics is bad for the environment?

This is totally false. Growing plants hydroponically is far more earth friendly than conventional gardening on numerous levels. As we are coming to realise that water is our most precious resource the first point worth noting is that hydroponics uses 70 to 90 percent less water than conventional gardening. The second greatest ecological benefit is that no fertilizer runoff escapes into our lakes, rivers and aquifers.

What is hydroponics?

The name means working water. It is the art of gardening without soil. There are six basic kinds of hydroponic systems with hundreds of possible variations.

What are the advantages of hydroponic versus soil grown plants?

No soil means no weeds or soil borne pests and diseases. Plants will maintain optimum nutrient and moisture levels in hydroponic systems, which offer several benefits: healthier plants, faster growing plants and plants that will be more disease resistant as they are not stressed by drought. The root systems stay smaller on hydroponically grown plants, so the plant can concentrate its growth energy on producing plant mass, rather than roots.

What humidity should I maintain?

Humidity is best maintained at around 50% in the centre of the plant canopy. Between 40%-60% is appropriate. Too high humidity runs the risk of disease and stretching.
