FAQs

  • Does my child need anything special to commence classes at BDC Dance?

No. Easy to move in clothing - ideally slim fit, and stretchy is adequate. Once your child is happy to stick with the selected style we have a simple dance wear requirement and a well stocked second hand goods cupboard to assist our families.

  • Do I need to pay in advance? And what if my child doesn't enjoy the chosen class?

To participate in obligation-free trial of classes selected, at BDC Dance you just go ahead and enrol. If the class is not suitable, then we seek another on our timetable for you to try out, or you may elect to withdraw without charge after trial. Often you don't know until you try.

  • I don't think my child will ever be a ballerina. But she is still interested to try ballet. What do you suggest?

Very few people have the makings of a ballerina, or a professional dancer of any style but thousands of people enjoy dance. Benefits are broad and the learning at BDC Dance is not limited to those with a vocational interest. Come, dance, enjoy!

  • My child is interested in dance but not ballet. Is ballet compulsory?

Absolutely not!~ We have the attitude that you enter an activity at the point of greatest interest, and if we do our job well, and your child enjoys the activity and learning then they may elect to extend and expand their involvement.

  • Do I need to be able to sew costumes?

Absolutely not! BDC Dance has an extensive resource of simple and effective costumes which we use and add to each year for our students to wear for performances.

  • Are the costume requirements an additional expense?

No - our fees are inclusive. When it comes to performances the only additional expenses are if you wish to purchase a professionally produced dvd - (at less than $30) is available, and of course tickets to see the performance.

  • When and where are performances? How do they run?

We hold our major dance concert usually late in October at a 400 seat theatre in Forest Hill. There are no late night rehearsals or performances for the younger children and it's not a long concert. The more classes a child takes the more they will perform. A one hour a week student would usually be in one group dance with his or her class group. We split our performances to be four shows.

  • What about Musical Theatre and Drama students?

We have separate performances in a smaller, more intimate local venue in November.

  • Are performances compulsory?

Dance is a performing art and preparing to perform, and performing is an important aspect of the learning. At BDC Dance the concert setting from class work to rehearsals, to backstage, to the stage is well managed to be the best possible experience for the students. The teachers are on duty at every performance so it is calm and orderly and fun.

  • I am not fit or slim or flexible and I have a collection of injuries and movement limitations. Is dance for me?

If you want to learn, then we want to teach you. Adults are encouraged to participate and adapt as needed if there is the need. Dont wait until you have slimmed down/dieted etc! That's just procrastinating. Make getting active and fit and healthy part of looking after yourself. You don't need to wear a leotard - Be happy to come along and get fitter in a relaxed environment with other adults.
