No, you don't need a referral from your dentist to see us at Modern Orthodontics, just call or email to book a free consultation appointment. The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that children should see an orthodontist for an initial orthodontic assessment at around the age of 8. This examination allows us to determine the optimum time to commence treatment. In some growing children, orthodontic problems will benefit from a course of earlier treatment to improve the bite so that the later course of orthodontic treatment can be minimised or completely avoided.
It is never too old to have orthodontic treatment, provided the teeth and their supporting structures are healthy, orthodontists can move them at any time.
Although metal braces are still the most efficient appliances for moving teeth, there are other alternatives. Clear braces made of ceramic have been gaining popularity. Clear braces are more aesthetically pleasing as they are less visible at a distance. With recent advances in technology, teeth can now also be straightened with a series of clear, plastic, removable aligners (Invisalign) without metal wires or brackets at all.
Most people will experience some discomfort after their braces are first put on or when adjusted during treatment. The teeth may become sore and may be tender to biting pressures for a few days. Don't worry, that means your teeth are moving! Over-the-counter painkillers such as Panadol will relieve the discomfort if required.
Removal of teeth might be required sometimes in order to gain enough space to straighten the teeth. Fortunately, with modern orthodontic technology and concepts, the need for removal of teeth has been greatly reduced. We believe every tooth is precious and will do our best to retain your complete and natural smile for life.
Your teeth will not be stable at the completion of orthodontic treatment as they have been moved to their new position within a relatively short period of time. Teeth always have a tendency to move back to their original position after the braces are removed. Therefore, it is very important for you to wear the retainers so that the gums and the supporting bone can adapt to the new position of the teeth and to keep the teeth straight.
