FAQs

  • Why do physiotherapists perform ultrasound?

Physiotherapists use real-time ultrasound to examine the size, function, timing & contraction endurance of the small stabilising muscles of the spine. Important trunk muscles and the pelvic floor are viewed In various positions and during different activities. Scientific research has shown that during an episode of low back pain these muscles contract poorly, in the wrong sequence or turn off and then waste away, long after the pain has settled.

  • What will a physiotherapist do?

The physiotherapist will thoroughly assess the affected areas and general biomechanics. To determine what factors may be contributing, also to rule out any other injuries or stress fractures etc. Treatment focusing on the affected area would include modified rest, stretching and massage and concerning the bigger bio-mechanical area include skill retraining, core stabilisation exercises and strength programs.

  • What happens next?

Once your specific problem areas are identified, coupled with other objective and functional measurements, your treating therapist will then develop the most appropriate exercise program for you. This may include home exercises, hands on treatment, functional restoration, work hardening or a pilates program. Real-time ultrasound may also be used for bio feedback to facilitate faster muscle re-education and strengthening.
