The most common way in which steel is treated to prevent corrosion and the problems associated with its effects, is via the used of specialised coatings. Corrosion occurs when the protective coating or galvanization of a piece of steel wears out and the bare metal is exposed to air and moisture. This exposure allows oxidisation and corrosion of the metal to occur - which we know as rust. Different types of coatings are best suited to different steel products and end uses: from domestic roofing and fencing through to high speed engines and pressure piping.
