08/22/2022
I had a consultation with Dr. Hillel New on 2 June 2022 for a cosmetic dentistry procedure. I initially enquiring through Dr New’s CDIC reception about a cosmetic dentistry procedure for an exclusive teeth aligner called the "Inman Aligner” they then claimed on their website that they offered to their patients. I did not enquire for or book for any general dentistry as I have my own ‘regular’ dentist of many years I go to in this regard.
Dr. New was friendly and chatty as he invited me into his procedure room. He then told me they no longer offer the Inman Aligner and hadn’t for some time. He said he was surprised it was still on their website.
Although I was only interested in the Inman Aligner cosmetic dentistry procedure and not any general dentistry work, Dr. New insisted on undertaking a full examination of my teeth. On doing so, he became very critical of my regular dentist. I found this conduct of his somewhat unprofessional. He proceeded to give me a list of what I consider was general dentistry work that he claimed I needed done. What he quoted me for amounted to in excess of $2200 spanning over three appointments.
After listening to all of this I wanted to burst into tears, but I tried to compose myself and finish up with the consultation (which I paid for). I was accompanied to the reception desk by Dr New and felt pressured to schedule in the 3 further appointments for general dentistry work, which I hesitantly did.
After I left, I wanted to verify Dr. New’s claim – essentially that my current dentist had not done a good job with regards to my general dentistry. Therefore, I contacted my regular dentist that same day. He was shocked by everything I had been told and reassured me that all that all the costly work that Dr New had quoted for was unnecessary.
After I was reassured that I did not need any further general dentistry work done, on 6 June 2022, I emailed CDIC to cancel the three appointments I had made with him.
The next day I received an email from Dr. New that I considered was a little aggressive which included Dr New expressing his disappointment at me cancelling my scheduled appointments. I wrote back the same day outlining my position including that I had been overwhelmed, went in only for a cosmetic procedure consultation (which wasn’t being offered) and came out with a very expensive quote for general dentistry and said I though his email was a ‘tad aggressive’ etc. Dr New emailed back the same day and his email included him apologising for his earlier email and setting out his justification for why he did what he did at my consultation.
