Need help with your finances? You need an accountant. But what’s the difference between a CPA and a CA? Here’s the lowdown.
In Australia there are two types of accountants, Certified Practicing Accountants and Chartered Accountants. It’s okay. They’re both friendly.
Certified Practicing Accountants
A CPA holds an undergraduate degree in accountancy which is accredited by CPA Australia. To qualify as a CPA they also have to complete the CPA program, which involves postgraduate study, three years of industry experience and commit to continuing professional development – notching up 120 hours of study every three years.
To practice as an accountant, they also have to complete the CPA’s public practice program.
Chartered Accountant
A Chartered Accountant is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICCA). After their university degree they continue their study with the postgraduate CA program. Following that they complete three years of industry experience and participate in 120 hours of professional development every three years.
So basically, both CPAs and CAs will be able help you sort out your finances. They are both members of a highly professional body, with rigorous training and continuing professional development.
