Simplicity is the key with bathroom cabinets

Bathroom cabinets are essential for creating a functional space, and can also make or break a bathroom design. Sleek, simple design and clean lines are in fashion, with stone and neutral finishes completing the look.

Sleek and simple are the buzz words for today’s cabinet designs. And to sit with the trend for clean lines, customers are choosing neutral colours and stone-look finishes.

According to bathroom retailer Jen Kaplun, bathroom cabinets with vinyl wrap and laminate finishes are currently the most popular. Vinyl wrap is a high-tech vinyl that is heat shrunk to the cabinetry, making it highly durable. "Using the heat-shrinking process means that it can be done on a production line, so it’s more cost effective," says Jen.

Customers are prepared to put quality first and are opting for cabinets that will stand the test of time, says Jen. Natural stone is always a popular choice and stone resin materials are also growing in popularity because of their durability. When it comes to colour, neutrals remain the firm favourite.

A focal point in many bathrooms, cabinets comes in myriad styles, from traditional to contemporary and a range of materials and finishes. From a simple vanity cabinet, featuring storage under the sink, to more elaborate designs incorporating open shelving or inexpensive stand-alone units, there is a cabinet to suit any bathroom design.

While it may seem easier to paint around handles and hinges, unless you’re an experienced painter you’re bound to get paint on them, so remove them first. Put them in individual bags, noting their original location on the cabinet, and place masking tape where the cabinet meets the walls or mirrors to protect those surfaces too.

Apply a primer that’s specifically designed for use on previously painted wood and let it dry completely before applying the paint. Gloss or satin enamel paints are best for humid bathroom conditions and are easy to maintain. Using a small roller to avoid brush strokes, apply two coats for a truly professional finish.
