How to choose the right counsellor

There’s loads of help out there for couples to help them navigate through their relationship problems. From books and workshops, to DVDs and blogs, there are plenty of folk out there promising solutions. These can all be helpful in their own way, but for some couples it’s not enough. That’s when it’s time to seek the help of a professional relationship counsellor.

Marriage, or couples counselling, is a different skill to individual counselling. It’s important to find a counsellor who is specialises in relationships. Also, although it might seem obvious, make sure your marriage counsellor actually believes in the importance of relationships – there are some therapists who believe that your individual personal happiness is more important than the union.

After your initial screening of a potential counsellor over the phone, schedule your first session.

First and foremost, you and your partner must feel comfortable with the counsellor. When you first meet with them, try to get a feel for who they are. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. How long have they been a relationship counsellor? What is their level of experience and have they any qualifications?

Are they married? Divorced? Do they have kids? Do you share a similar worldview? It will be much easier to discuss intimate relationship issues if you can see eye to eye. Also ask about their approach to helping your relationship – you need to feel comfortable with the process you are about to undertake.

There are other questions too – don’t forget to make an inquiry about the business side of the practice, e.g. cancellation policy, methods of payment, and return of phone calls.

If you need to find someone to talk to, find a relationship counsellor in your neighbourhood on the Yellow Pages.
