What sort of turf is suited to my requirements?
Index
The sort of turf you need depends on a lot of different factors that are specific to your situation. It depends on the climate in your area, what kind of grass you want and how much time, effort and money you are willing to put into grass care.
There are quite a few features that you will need to consider when you are trying to choose a lawn and turf that suits your requirements.
These features include:
- How much watering they require.
- How tolerant they are to drought conditions.
- How resistant they are to heat.
- How resistant they are to the cold.
- How tolerant they are of shade/lack of sunlight.
- How much fertilizer is required.
- What their colour retention is like.
- The texture of the grass.
- How short it can be mown.
- What kind of wear tolerance it has.
When you are trying to find turf grass that you want in your garden, you should ask about these sort of features. You should also take a look at these features and figure out which ones are most important for your conditions.
For example, if you live in a region that is not temperate and is constantly warm, there is no point getting a grass lawn that is highly tolerant to the cold. You will need to find a turf that is heat resistant and, depending on how much it rains in your area, possibly resistant to drought as well.
You also have to think on a smaller scale such as how much sunlight the area receives – if your lawn is in the shade of your house most of the day, you will need a turf that does not need excessive sunlight.
One of the most important factors is how much time and effort you are willing to spend on gardening and lawn care. Some grasses will need constant watering, while others are particularly easy to maintain. Some will require more fertiliser than others, which not only means time spent gardening but also money spent on buying fertiliser. If you really don’t want to take care of your grass at all, you might want to consider artificial lawns and fake grass. Do keep in mind, however, that fake grass is not often as comfortable nor has the environmental benefits of real grass.
Of course, you must also take into consideration what you will be using the grass for. Do you have children or pets that will be playing in the grass? In that case you will need to make sure you have grass that is able to grow all year round and has a texture that is comfortable to play on. Some grasses are very coarse while others are gentler.
You should also consider how short you can mow the grass, since some grasses will not be able to survive at a very small height. If this is the case, you will not be able to get that manicured garden appearance that finely mown lawns have.
Make sure you do plenty of research into the type of grass you are getting before you go and buy it. Ask at your nearest gardening or landscape supplies stores about it if you feel unsure. You don’t want to end up purchasing some grass and end up having it die or be unsuitable for your needs.
