Having trouble breastfeeding? You’re not alone

More than 96% of mothers start breastfeeding when their babies are born, but this number quickly drops away.

By three months old only 39% of infants are still being exclusively breastfed, and by 5 months only about 15% are. This is despite recommendations from the World Health Organisation that babies should be exclusively breastfed until 6 months of age.

Obviously there is a disconnect between what women initially set out to do, and what happens when the realities hit home.

While breastfeeding is without a doubt the very best way to nourish your baby, promoting healthy development and key bonding between mother and child, there are many reasons why, despite the best intentions, it doesn’t always work out.

While every woman and every situation is different, these reasons can include the physical difficulties of breastfeeding, medical issues, the pressures of returning to work, and sharing the feeding of the newborn with other family members.

If you are struggling to breastfeed your child, one of your key allies could well be a lactation consultant or a breastfeeding counsellor. A lactation consultant is a health professional with international certification, and usually works within a hospital or child health service. They may also operate via a private practice. A lactation consultant will visit you and your child for a home consult. They charge a fee per hour which may include follow-up visits.

On the other hand, a breastfeeding counsellor is a trained volunteer who offers breastfeeding information and mother-to-mother support. All Australian Breastfeeding Association counsellors have Certificate IV and are experienced mothers. They can counsel you over the phone, via email or at local support groups.

If you are looking for a trained consultant or counsellor in your area, Yellow Pages has over 100 lactation consultants and more than 5000 Breastfeeding Support services listed around the country. Reach out.
