How do I prepare my room or work area for the plasterers?
Index
Plasterers undertake many types of job – ceiling and wall plastering, rendering, fixing plasterboard etc. – and the preparation and plastering tools for each type of job will different, not only depending on what type of plastering they are undertaking, but also on the agreement between them and their customer.
You need to be sure that you are clear on the what is being plastered and what preparations are your responsibility.
Wall to Wall
Plasterers work on not only walls but also on ceilings and on trims and edgings. If you are having a ceiling "hung" by plasterers then your preparations will be different from those required if you were only having walls done. You should always be clear as to the scope of works being undertaken.
Out with the old
- Old plaster needs to be removed. This may be done by the plasterer but in some cases it isn’t part of the service agreement; so you need to check
- If you have to remove plaster you will also need to dispose if it, so you may require a skip or to arrange for the waste to be transported
- As well as walls you may also need to remove skirting boards as well as door and window trims. Before you throw these out make sure that new ones are included in the agreement
- Before you remove the existing ceiling you should consult someone experienced in this field. Removing ceilings brings with it many risks like falling objects, working at heights and electrical hazards
- When removing old plaster you should always ensure that you have turned the power off before starting. Electrical wires run through walls and ceilings and should be treated with respect at all times
- Plumbing and venting may also be running through the walls so stop and work out what is underneath before you start ripping away
In with the new
- New plaster needs to be treated differently to painted walls and needs certain preparation for painting. Make sure you follow the recommended preparations before painting walls.
- Plaster needs to be sanded so make sure you have all your furniture covered and the door to the room or rooms sealed so that the dust doesn’t spread through your house.
- Trimmings such as skirting boards and picture rails are added after the plaster has been hung and is dry. This may not be part of your contract with your plasterer, so check at the start of the job.
- Plasterers aren’t painters so you will have to paint the walls yourself or get a painter in to do it. If you are unsure about paint types, speak to your local paint store for advice.
Always remember safety
During any maintenance or construction work be aware of electrical wires in the home and where they run. If you have exposed electrical wires make sure that you keep young children and animals far away from them.
Always ensure that you are clear on what preparations are your responsibility and ensure that they appear in writing as part of your contractual agreement with the plasterer.
