How to find a great plumber

We always need an plumber at the worst, most inconvenient time. Like 2am on a public holiday. In a thunderstorm.

And because we’re desperate, we’re likely to hire the first plumber we call, even at the risk of being ripped off by a 17 year old apprentice.

But it is possible to find a great plumber, even in an emergency. You just need to know what questions to ask.

The first rule? Don’t automatically hire the guy with the cheapest quote. The cost should not be the only consideration. You should always check credentials and licenses before you hire any plumber.

The best way to find a great plumber is to look for a member of a professional plumber’s organisation, such as the Master Plumbers Association. Members of the MPA are required to be fully licensed contractors, and comply with the rules and code of conduct of the organisation.  There are Master Plumbers Associations (MPA) or Plumbing Industry Associations (PIA) right across Australia.

If you choose a plumber who is a member of the MPA you can be guaranteed that he or she will be a licensed plumber who has completed apprenticeship training and the requisite trade course.  Not only that, but to become a MPA member, they’re required to undertake at least two years extra training, plus the completion of a Certificate IV in Plumbing technology. This level of training is required right across Australia, so it’s a great way to ensure that you are hiring the best plumbers available.

If there are no Master Plumbers in your area, there are still ways to ensure that the plumber you hire is reputable.

First, check that they are a licensed contractor with the Office of Fair Trading, and ask to see their license to make sure that it’s current.

Next, always ask for references. Look for testimonials of reliability, professionalism and great customer relations.

And remember, cost should not be the main factor in hiring a plumber – make sure they are fully qualified and insured first.

Yellow Pages can help you find a great plumber in your neighbourhood. Search for Master Plumbers near you, and call up to arrange a quote today.  And then save the number – in case of an emergency.
