How much tip should you leave?
Index
When paying a dining bill, do I need to leave a tip and how much should I leave? This question is often asked in Australia, as the tipping system here is not as clearly defined as in other countries.
Tipping is not mandatory
In countries such as the USA, tipping is expected because generally the average wages for staff are low and they rely on tips as part of their income. In Australia, workers are generally paid sufficiently for the work that they do and tipping is not seen as mandatory. However, the practice of tipping is becoming more common. Tipping is practiced more in larger cities and in tourist situations such as when staying in a hotel.
Tipping for service that goes beyond the norm
Australians tend to tip when they have been impressed with a meal or service. In these cases the general rule of thumb is to leave a tip that is 10% of the total bill. For other services such as hotel room service, taxis, porterage or other personal service, a tip of anywhere between two to five dollars is customary.
Check your bill
Before you tip, you may want to check if you have already been levied a service charge. This is often listed at the bottom of a menu where you will also find surcharges that apply to public holidays or corkage.
How to tip
Tips can be added when paying by credit card, left in cash on the table, or included with payment. Some establishments will have a common tip jar in which to deposit tips.
Make a reservation for your next dining experience and if you are impressed with your meal or service, then you may feel prompted to leave a tip.
