How much should I budget for a new trailer?

How much does a trailer cost?
When you’re searching for trailers for sale, you’ll want to consider your needs and preferences before setting a budget. Firstly, do you want a second hand trailer or a brand new trailer? Are you purchasing a trailer from a retailer, or do you want a custom made trailer? The amount you should set for a budget will vary on these points, as well as other factors such as your location.
New and used trailers
Trailers don’t depreciate as quickly as cars but a second hand trailer is definitely going to be cheaper than a brand new one. If you’re sticking to a budget, rather than compromising on quality by buying a cheaper brand-new trailer, consider purchasing a high-quality second hand trailer instead.

Without the moving parts of a car, second hand trailers are a great proposition and readily available. If you need something specially made for purpose, then you need to budget for a higher amount. Individuality costs more, but the advantage is that you get something perfect for your requirements.
Do your research on trailer prices
There are lots of places where you can investigate the cost of trailers. There are plenty of websites that sell goods and have trailers for sale too. General sites such as Ebay will give you a lot of information on trailer costs but will show mostly used trailers. Other trading sites will give you more options of new trailers, but if you need to estimate the cost of a custom made trailer you should contact a manufacturer.
Not sure of who manufacturers trailers? You can search Yellow Pages for local manufacturing firms. The following are some rough estimates of new basic trailers.

Your budget for a trailer should reflect the use and what you are carrying. If you are using the trailer to transport a $50k boat you would probably consider spending more than if you were just towing a good old-fashioned tinny. Also, consider the frequency that you would be using the trailer and the distances that you will be covering.
Many forms of trailer come in off-road versions so if you’re a 4WD enthusiast you can still tow a trailer, you will probably just need to budget a larger amount. If you only need to use a trailer once, you should investigate rental opportunities. Many petrol station and car hire businesses also rent out all sorts of trailers, by the day and by the week. If your usage will be rare or infrequent this may be the better option.
