The wedding reception: cocktail party or sit down dinner?
Index
Want to know what makes a bride and groom happy on their wedding night?
No, we’re not talking about that.
A married couple will look back on their wedding day happily knowing their guests had just as good a time as they did.
Having friends and family chatting while enjoying a meal together or mingling with a glass of bubbly and hors d’oeuvres in hand is a great way to encourage this.
The type of wedding reception you decide on and the food you serve plays a huge part in how your guests engage with the wedding party and other guests.
Here are two things to consider when choosing between a sit-down and a stand-up wedding reception:
The Food Selection
If you’re after a classic three-course dinner for your wedding then you really can’t avoid a sit-down meal. There’s nothing worse than watching Nanna try to negotiate green peas while standing up.
But if you’re going for a more casual, stand-up approach, then the menu needs careful consideration.
Think about what food will work. Obviously finger food and cocktails work better together than soup and cocktails. Ask your wedding reception venues for help with suggestions for the perfect menu.
Prepare to Mingle
It’s well known that people mingle better at a cocktail party. And if they are seated next to people they don’t know, they’ll also make the effort to be friendly – so don’t be afraid to mix the friendship groups up a little.
But if you opt for a standing-up reception remember to have comfy seats available for elderly guests and women in high heels. Just place them strategically so that guests who choose to sit are still be part of the action.
When deciding between a cocktail or sit-down wedding reception, be true to the mood that you want for your special day, and then take into consideration the age and situation of your guests.
