What is a safety switch? Do I need one?

Safety switch or an RCD (Residual Current Device) is your family's life insurance against electric shock. What are the rules regarding safety switches and smoke alarms?

The AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and State Building Codes have a number of stringent electrical standards in place. These Wiring Rules are often overlooked in older homes (15 – 20 years) that may not have safety switches installed. By Law, every new home and rental property in Australia is required to have a residual current device (Safety Switch) and a 240V smoke alarm installed by a qualified electrician. Around 40% of Australian homes remain completely unprotected by safety switches.

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

There may be there are too many electrical appliances plugged into the circuit, causing the circuit to overload and trip the breakers. Circuits are designed to only handle so much electric demand.
