Took my VL V8 in to get the rear main seal done, the only way to get it done properly is to remove the engine. The first estimate was $1950 -$2000, all up. While the engine was out I also had the brakes done and the motor was freshened up. When I got to the second last invoice the estimate to refit motor in his own words, (labour to refit engine and gearbox to vehicle. Run in new engine. Road test and reinspect over all work carried out.) Estimate $1950. When I received the last invoice he charged me, in his words ( labour to reassemble accessories on to engine ready to fit into vehicle. Fit all accessories. Add fluids to vehicle ready to start. Run in new engine and test drive. Reinspect and retention over all work carried out. This cost me $5000. For a mechanic that has been going for 12years I thought his estimate would not be $3150 out. Said it took him 40 hours to put the engine back in and get it going. I have been quoted 8 hours for the same job at the most, from a few mechanics since. The worst thing now is I have a leak from the auto transmission, a leak from around the oil pump, and a leak from the diff that he played around with. Have had a quote from two automatic transmission mechanics on the Sunshine Coast and it is going to cost me from $1500 to $2000 to fix. If you must get anything done with this company don’t trust the estimate.
