kitchen with no working sink after 18 months, and they have sent me a solicitor's letter

My experience with UKB was good to until my kitchen sink started to leak 18 months after renovation. When we had our kitchen done, Jeff from UKB suggested to move our existing kitchen sink from under a bay window to the back wall. We were told it's not possible to connect to conventional sewerage without damaging the concrete slab underneath, and was told the only way to go would be to have a pump under the sink which will pump waste water all the way up to a first floor bathroom.

We have since found out that the pump was only employed routinely in places where conventional sewerage was not possible such as a basement toilet or bathroom which is seldomly used. Also it's possible for my kitchen to have a conventional sewerage if a structural engineer's report would be done. Or the design of the kitchen could be altered to accomadate sewerage requirements. None of that was done by UKB. As one plumber who came out to my house later on to give his opinion said : why fight gravity when you don't have to?

The only reason why the pump was installed was that UKB wanted to save cost. Our kitchen renovation cost was $68000 without the appliances and UKB never gave us any discount when they proceeded with the pump instead of cutting into the underfloor concrete.

The kitchen pump failed after 18months. UKB took 7 weeks to replace it, the new pump lasted 3 weeks before leaking water. Fast forward another 3 and half months, I'm still without a working sink in the kitchen. I gave them a deadline of 20th of May to come up with a solution and a date on which the problem will be fixed. On that day, I received a solicitor's letter saying UKB is not responsible for the pump, that it was my fault for having oil/grease down the sink and failing to clean it out regularly. They also threatened me to remove the one star rating I gave online based on my experience. I was incredulous that this should happen, and have applied to the Domestic Building Dispute to resolve the matter. I anticipate this will go to VCAT, and I could be facing 2-3 years of wait time. My experience with UKB could only be described as terrible.

We completely re-did our bathroom, en-suite and powder room. Jeff did the designs and project managed every stage. His tradesmen were excellent and very considerate of the impact on our home during the process. The quality of workmanship is excellent and Jeff and his staff were extremely attentive to our needs during the process with the trades following on from each other with minimal wait periods.

The result is outstanding. We couldn't be happier. Would recommend Ultimate without hesitation.
