The owner of The Empress is staunchly pro live music and anti pokie, that enough would be reason to give this place a good rating. If it's a quiet night you might get to hear her tell you this yourself as she's known to have a good chat with her patrons, all part of the charm of the place. Live music is on most nights and the band room is always cheap entry if not free, or you can just sit out in the front bar and listen.
