I am a member and have just returned after a prolonged pause in my exercise regime. I use he pool and gym. I really enjoy the pool which I regard as being very clean. The kids who work there are great as well. The change-rooms are fine apart from the fact that I nearly fell off the bench in the indoor room as the bench has parted company with the wall.
Similar to privately owned gyms I have frequented, my concern revolves around the lack of supervision on the floor. My assumption is that there is not enough staff. The emphasis seems to be on sales and supervision of beginners and not enough attention is paid to ongoing gym patrons.
The young staff also seem to gravitate towards gym users of similar age and interests rather than the older patrons. There does not seem to be a realisation that gyms can be dangerous environments.
Yesterday I seriously injured my shoulder trying to use a weight bench. I was using the barbells and exceeded my capacity in all probability. I am not saying greater supervision would necessarily have prevented this injury but it might have. I short time later I was trying to use a machine incorrectly and had it not been for the assistance of another patron I may have injured myself further. My exercise regime has consequently been compromised after a hip replacement operation. I can neither swim or exercise my upper body. One should not have to rely on the assistance of other patrons. From a positive perspective, I must add that the equipment seems to be in a great state of repair which is contrary to my experience in other gyms I have attended.
In my opinion, this industry needs to be more acutely aware of the health and safety elements relevant to regular and more particularly, older and health impaired patrons. I am 68-years-old and have a recent hip replacement and ongoing spinal issues so it's a double whammy of age and other impairment. I hate to think of the outcome of an audit of work-safe issues in public gyms.
