They explicitly told me in an email it would be $135 to hang our garage door springs and service the door, they asked for and received photos of the problem prior to arrival.
At the end of their call out they had neither hung the springs nor serviced the door and still charged me the $135.
The technician from memory had undone a nut and done it up again (maybe 2 or 3 minutes work) and pulled down on the springs for about 3 seconds before giving up. Start state... broken door, end state... broken door. For all intents and purposes what they did was a quote.
After checking the email and pointing out they had not fulfilled their side of our agreement they said that because the technician had tried to fix it they were still charging the fee.
I then expressed my customer experience that for me it felt like a scam being charged $135 and receiving no actual benefit in return, they became extremely and unnecessarily rude... severing ties... and calling my email "stupid".
Even if it wasn't a scam in this case, what a great scam it would make. Agree to fix a customers problem for a certain price, come to the call out without the parts or equipment necessary to fix it, charge the call out fee in spite of not fixing the problem, quote nearly 5x the original price to actually fix the problem and whether the customer decides to proceed or not... you're still making over $200 an hour.
When customers complain... just call their emails stupid and maybe they'll go away.
