This morning I attended the Hopkins Street Medical Clinic. I presented as I am 5 days post shoulder surgery and I awoke to realise that I had run out of pain medication, due to lack of my own forethought. I presented in severe pain, with accompanying nausea and dizziness, to the point that I was concerned I may collapse.
I arrived at the receptionist’s desk, requesting the possibility of urgent appointment. I explained to her that due to severe pain and being in a sling, I was unable to drive to my normal doctor who is located across town. I also apologised for the inconvenience I knew I would be causing by this not being my normal medical practice.
The receptionist proceed state in the most sarcastic tone “That they don't take one off appointments, and that I should find my own way to my Doctor”, this took me by complete surprise. I proceeded by politely thanking her for her rudeness, she replied by rolled her eyes and looked to her fellow receptionists as to say “Is this lady serious?”
I was considering transferring to this medical clinic, as it is located close to my place of work, however now I will not even entertain the idea.
I personally come from a 10 year medical background. I understand that at times it is hard to make appointments for clients, however this does not excuse her actions. I truly hope that this receptionist learns the meaning of compassion and empathy.
