I had not been to the zoo is ages, so it was great to head back and have a look around. As far as zoo go its clean, friendly and there are great viewing areas of all the animals. As expected the food is limited and expensive but if you are going to the zoo to eat well maybe you are not there for the true purpose. A great day out, easy to get to and close to the city.

Love the melbourne zoo. It is all flat so getting arond with a stroller is not hard work. The enclosures are getting better and better.
The shows lack the entertainment value of the Sydney zoo, but still tell you a bit about the animals without turning it into a lecture. There is a large picnic area if you bring you own food along and open space for the kids to have a run without running afoul of any rules.

We have been to many zoos around the world and I'm proud to say that this is one of the better ones. It may be a little expensive, and the overall area may not be extremely huge however the animals seem to be well taken care of.
What we enjoy the most here is how theyre transitioning from simply a caged animals style zoo to a more open plan feel, with each area having different themes. E.g. an asian farmland feel in the elephant area, and Australian fauna area, a very impressive orang-utan display, and much more!
This is definitely not just a place for kids. We adults can enjoy it too! Probably best to avoid going during the school holidays though to avoid the screaming and running young homosapiens.

Melbourne Zoo is a great place to see Australian and African animals. There are kangaroos hopping about in some sections. Highlights are the Platypus house and the iconic display is the gorilla area. The otters are probably the most entertaining and you can get quite near them. There are also twilight concerts in the zoo in summer. Be warned that walking around the zoo can be very tiring for little ones (and oldies) as it is quite spread out and covers a reasonable slope on what is one big side of a long low hill.

ONE HIGHLIGHT AFTER ANOTHER
The Melbourne Zoo is a world class facility. Never ready to rest on their laurels, they seem to understand the imperative to go better and bigger. I have long supported the zoo, but in the last few years have been amazed by such exhibits as the new elephant enclosure, and exciting new showcases for the seals and apes.
Some might criticise zoos, but fail to see that many people will never have the opportunity to travel and see all the amazing animals of the world in their own habitiat.
The shops, the conference facilities, in fact just about everything they do at the zoo with the exception of the food outlets (take you own picnic if you can) are of the highest quality.

The zoo is a great day out, but it also offers other great things to do. Work hired a function room to run an off-site day and it was great. We got to wander around the grounds first and see all the animals. The grounds and enclosures are very well created and I particularly liked the Wild Sea exhibit. In summer they also have music and entertainment at night which is always great fun.
