I’ll be honest – when I booked my Virgin Atlantic flight to Sydney, I expected 24 hours of cramped misery. What I got instead felt suspiciously like... fun?
Somewhere over Singapore, as I nibbled on surprisingly decent beef rendang and watched the cabin crew turn the galley into an impromptu therapy space for nervous flyers, it hit me: this wasn’t just a flight. It was a masterclass in keeping humans happy while trapped in a metal tube.
The magic was in the details:
The pilot’s mid-flight announcement pointing out the Southern Cross constellation
The way the crew remembered I liked my gin with extra lime after the first round
That glorious moment when they broke out ice cream sundaes during the Darwin-to-Sydney leg
Even in economy, there was room to breathe (and do questionable yoga poses near the loos). The entertainment system saved me with every season of "Taskmaster" – though I’ll never forgive the person who took the last pair of noise-cancelling headphones.
By the time we landed, I’d made three new friends, eaten four meals (no regrets), and actually felt sad to leave. Since when does that happen on a long-haul flight?
The Verdict:
Virgin Atlantic doesn’t just transport you to Australia – they make the journey part of the adventure. Just bring your own headphones.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (lost a star for my stiff knees, not their fault)
