Why Spring beats New Year for a new you

The New Year is a popular time to set health and fitness resolutions. But by the time May rolls around, we’re ready to pull the doona over our heads, smother ourselves in big winter coats, and settle in with Netflix and a box of Dairy Milk favourites.
That’s the problem with the whole concept of “New Year, New You”. There is simply too much going on in summer to pay attention to personal goals. From school holidays, to preparing for back-to-term, summer socialising, not to mention the long list of jobs that need to be checked off while we’re on summer holidays. Finding time to focus on the self is pretty hard.
That’s why spring is so awesome.
Like the plants and animals, we’re all waking up from a big wintery slumber. Our energy levels rise with the warmth in the air, and suddenly being outside in the warm sweet air is the best thing ever.
Going for a walk around the block on your lunchbreak? Yes please! Taking the bikes out on the weekend? Great idea! Early morning bootcamp? Absolutely. Getting stuck into the gardening? A perfect way to spend the weekend.
Getting fit is easy, because we’re motivated.
And after a winter full of rich, heavy foods, we’re suddenly yearning for light, healthy salads, fresh fish, and big bowls of the amazing array of fruit that’s coming into season. It’s a great reason to spring into action.
But it’s not just the change in the air that is a big motivator.
Suddenly we’ve got a reason to get fit. After all, summer is just around the corner. And with that comes planning for holidays, a new wardrobe full of summery styles to embrace, and a social season to look forward to.
And that’s why spring is better than the New Year for a New You.
