What is a flat pack kitchen?

If you’re considering kitchen renovations for your home, a kitchen flat pack is a great choice for a modern, stylish and easy to install look. But, what is a flat pack kitchen exactly?

Flat pack kitchens are DIY kitchen cabinetry that comes in a flat pack, ready for you to assemble and install yourself. Along with the cabinetry, they include benchtops, fittings, handles and draw runners. Each piece of your cabinetry is cut perfectly and drilled for you to fit the pieces together.

With a flat pack kitchen, you can save money because the price does not include the labour for factory assembly. If you opt for DIY installation, you can save thousands of dollars. Even hiring a tradie to assemble and install your flatpack kitchen will be cheaper than a brand new kitchen that’s been designed, built and installed in your home.

You can order flat pack kitchens to suit your home’s exact dimensions, and the manufacturer will usually send them to you within 28 days of receiving the plans.

Preparing for installation

To install a DIY flat pack kitchen, you’ll need to prepare your kitchen space first. Using a spirit level you can check the walls for any uneven spots or holes. Mark them up with your pencil for future reference. To ensure the cabinet and wall line up straight when you install the wall cabinets, you’ll need to fill any gaps with a packer.

With a set square, check your right-angled corners for any gaps between the wall that are larger than 6mm. If there are significant gaps, you might need the help of a professional kitchen installer. You’ll also need to measure the distance between any walls that are opposite to each other at numerous spots to see whether your walls run parallel.

For the base cabinets, use your spirit level again to check the floor in the places where you will be installing them. Pencil in on the wall where the highest and lowest sections of the floor are.

Finally, use your kitchen plan to help measure the position of your cabinets and mark where they will be with your pencil so you can understand your layout and how all the pieces will fit together during the installation process.

Installing your flatpack kitchen

Here is a basic guide to installing a flatpack kitchen. Make sure to follow all the instructions included with your pieces.

  1. Set the height of your cabinets: To do this, find the point you marked as the highest of the kitchen floor and pencil a mark on the wall from that point at 870mm. Next, draw a level line from here to where your base cabinets will go. This line is used to set the height of your cabinets.
  2. Corner cabinet installation: For kitchens with a corner, you should start here first. Place your corner cabinet in position and adjust the legs of your cabinet so they line up with your set height. Use the spirit level to check it’s positioned accurately. For plaster walls, you’ll need to measure out from the corner to the wall studs. Then, leave a mark where they need to line up onto the base cabinet.
If you don’t have a corner cabinet, start with your end cabinet, and make sure all your edges are flush against the wall and square. Continue this process with all the base cabinets. When they are all secured, you can install your benchtop. Finally, fit the drawers, doors, handles and kickboards.
  3. Dealing with legs and uneven floors: It’s pretty standard to set your adjustable legs to the same height as the kickboards at 140mm. For uneven floorboards, you’ll need to cut your kickboards to fit.
  4. Hire a tradesman: Once your flat pack kitchen is installed, hire a tradie for any plumbing or electrical work that needs to be completed. Then, you’re all good to go!
