Can a Podiatrist refer you for x-rays and diagnostic ultrasounds?
We all know that your GP can refer you for xrays, scan and ultrasounds, but can a podiatrist do the same?
What does a podiatrist do?
Podiatrists treat a wide range of injuries and conditions of the feet and lower limbs, including those resulting from arthritis and soft-tissue and muscular injuries. Podiatrists are also able to diagnose and treat any complications of these conditions as they affect the feet and ankles. Podiatrists also diagnose and treat foot injuries and infections arising from sport or other activities.
What about xrays?
In Australia, podiatrists complete an undergraduate degree in Podiatry, which includes biomedical science subjects and podiatric specific medical studies. One of the methods in which podiatrists are trained is the use of xrays and diagnostic ultrasounds. Your podiatrist is recognised by Medicare as being able to refer patients for xrays and ultrasound studies.
In additional to Medibank referrals, many podiatrists use the HICAPS system which allows direct rebate from your private health insurer.
