How to choose the right security door
Index
A security door is the entrance to your home. So not only do you want it to give the impression of strength and security, you also want it to look great.
Customised doors
Whether you want doors, windows, gates or even balustrades, your manufacturer can custom design, build and install to your specifications.
Today’s machinery that shapes steel security doors is amazingly malleable and efficient –so you’re no longer stuck with prison-style bars over your front door. What’s more, security grilles can be customised to suit any architectural style, from Victorian cottage to contemporary. And finally, anodised powder coatings come is a vast array of colours, and are incredibly durable – so your doors will look great for years.
Strength = security
You can upgrade on security too. Here’s some things to look out for when you’re upgrading your locks:
- Your security door locks should be five-pin cylinder or equivalent.
- A three-point lock will prevent the bottom or top of the door being wrenched back by an intruder, and should also spread the force of an attack.
- Don’t use aluminium rivets – they are easier to knock out.
- The door should have at least three hinges with fixed hinge pins that can’t be removed.
- A fixed steel pin welded into the hinge leaf, rather than just pressed into it, gives additional protection.
- The bigger the pin, the better. Ideally the hinges should be recessed or the door should have a hinge filling between the door and the frame that doesn’t allow access for a crowbar.
- A single hinge that runs along the full length of the frame does the same job.
- If you have a mesh and grille system, the cords of the grille should be at least 7mm thick.
Types of Common Security Doors
- Stainless Steel: this is the strongest security door material and can be combined with a steel mesh to provide even more security;
- Aluminium mesh: a perforated aluminium sheet in an extruded aluminium frame provides security and is also corrosion resistant, which is good for those who live near the sea;
- Aluminium mesh and grille: combines the strength of a diamond shape grille fixed into an extruded aluminium frame with mesh;
- Federation style: aluminium processed in a die cast gives a Federation door look plus safety, finished with powder coating to match your home.
Being able to keep your front door open throughout summer, while keeping the security door fastened, you’re helping to cool the house down and saving on electricity, and maintaining your home security.
With so many styles, colours and materials, there’s no longer any reason not to give your home that extra bit of protection.
